Editorial and Review Policy

Surge Protection Experts publishes homeowner education about whole-home surge protection, equipment protection, installation planning, maintenance, and damage recovery. This policy explains how topics are selected, what evidence supports the work, how product recommendations are made, and how commercial relationships are separated from editorial judgment.

Reader usefulness comes first

A page should help a homeowner make a safer, clearer decision. We favor questions with a distinct reader job: understand the protection path, compare installation types, translate ratings, prepare for a quote, evaluate a current model, check device status, or respond after a damaging event. We avoid creating near-duplicate pages simply to target spelling variations or product keywords.

Every article has one primary intent, a deliberate place in the site’s topic structure, and internal links to the next useful decision. Commercial pages should not crowd out foundational safety and maintenance information.

Source hierarchy

Claims are researched from the strongest practical source available. Our preferred order is:

  1. manufacturer product pages, current instructions, technical data, lifecycle notices, and warranty documents for model-specific facts;
  2. standards organizations, electrical-safety organizations, government publications, utilities, and code-related authorities for general safety and technical context;
  3. insurers, regulators, and official program documentation for policy, disclosure, or program claims; and
  4. reputable secondary material only when it adds context that a primary source does not provide.

We do not treat retailer summaries, search snippets, AI-generated answers, or anonymous forum comments as sufficient proof of a safety-critical specification. Community discussions may reveal real homeowner questions, but factual claims still require appropriate verification.

Product comparison method

Whole-house surge protectors are evaluated by application fit before headline capacity. Depending on the product and intended location, we examine:

  • Type classification and permitted installation location;
  • voltage, phase, wiring configuration, panel or equipment compatibility;
  • VPR, nominal discharge current, surge-current rating, SCCR, MCOV, and protection modes;
  • indoor/outdoor enclosure and mounting requirements;
  • conductor-routing and overcurrent-protection instructions;
  • status indication, alarms, contacts, modules, and replacement behavior;
  • product lifecycle, instruction revision, warranty term, and important eligibility conditions; and
  • meaningful alternatives for a different location, system, or monitoring need.

A larger kA number is not automatically “better.” Figures are compared only when they describe the same measure and context. We do not convert editorial impressions into laboratory claims or aggregate ratings.

Unless a page explicitly documents otherwise, we have not purchased, installed, destructively tested, or laboratory-tested the product. A “review” may be a documentation-based fit guide, and the page should say so plainly.

Safety and scope

The site provides general education, not individualized electrical engineering, code, insurance, legal, installation, or emergency advice. Panel and service equipment can remain hazardous even when a main breaker is off. We do not publish step-by-step instructions that encourage an unqualified reader to open or work inside energized equipment.

Local code adoption, the authority having jurisdiction, utility rules, equipment listings, manufacturer instructions, and the conditions at the property control the actual installation. A qualified electrician should evaluate panel- and service-connected work.

Commercial independence and disclosures

The site may receive compensation from qualifying product purchases, qualifying service-help calls, advertising, sponsorships, or other disclosed relationships. Compensation does not authorize a partner to hide limitations, rewrite conclusions, suppress corrections, or present paid placement as independent editorial work.

When a link or call can generate compensation, the affected page receives a clear disclosure before or near the decision. A sitewide policy does not replace the in-context notice. Sponsored or contributed work must be labeled according to the actual relationship.

Products may be included before an affiliate relationship exists. Enrollment, commission rate, seller popularity, and inventory do not establish product quality or electrical fit.

Images and AI-assisted production

Editorial illustrations are produced to explain systems, comparisons, and protection paths without depicting unsafe panel access or implying that an actor is a listed contractor. Illustrations should not be mistaken for wiring diagrams, installation instructions, certification marks, exact product photography, or proof of hands-on testing.

Automated tools may assist with research organization, drafting, consistency checks, internal-link planning, metadata preparation, and illustration production. Publication still requires source review, safety review, editorial QA, and a human-accountable publishing decision. We do not cite an AI output as the authority for a technical claim.

Updates, corrections, and conflicts

Material updates receive a truthful modified date. Volatile product specifications, warranties, prices, availability, and lifecycle claims are rechecked against current sources before a substantive refresh. Older passages are retained only when they remain accurate and useful; unsupported claims are corrected rather than preserved for historical convenience.

If we discover an error, we aim to correct the affected page and recheck dependent comparisons or links. A verified public corrections channel will appear in the site footer when available; submitted corrections should identify the affected URL, disputed statement, and supporting source.

Potential conflicts should be disclosed on the affected page. Invented credentials, reviews, customer ratings, social profiles, or first-hand experience are prohibited.
